Company culture is the personality of a company. It defines the environment in which we work. It includes various elements, including work environment, company mission, value, ethics, expectations, and goals.
Culture is created, not imposed
A fine line exists between spelling out company culture and inadvertently engraving it as policy.
- Culture offers opportunities to express yourself. Policy forces people to share outside their comfort zone.
- Culture inspires colleagues to be curious about new topics in their free time. Policy puts a mandatory training session on your calendar.
- Culture nurtures pet projects so that they grow into everyday company tools. Policy steals 10% of your work hours to gamble on forced research and development.
- Culture does. Policy says.
- Culture encourages. Policy requires.
- Culture empowers. Policy mandates.
Culture simply happens — we can't create one.
Real cultures build over time. They are the result of action, reaction, and truth. They are nuanced, beautiful, and authentic. Don't think about creating a culture. Just do the right things for you, our customers, and your team, and it'll happen.
What we'd like to see
The rest of this book tries to walk the fine line between giving you the maximum freedom while sharing principles that we believe will help everybody grow.
There are a few things that we are hoping to see blossom as Agilytic grows.
The right attitude
It is difficult to describe what we mean by the right attitude, but it is easy to spot. It is usually a mix of
- Maturity
- Professionalism
- Proactivity
- Positivity: being solution-oriented instead of problem-focused
We will elaborate on some of those in the "values" section.
Meaningful relationships
We encourage you to build meaningful relationships with your colleagues. Professional relationships don't always lead to long-lasting friendships, but we firmly believe that feeling safe and happy in the presence of the people you spend most of your working day with goes a long way to doing great work.
Unrestricted knowledge sharing
We hope that these relationships will allow you to share knowledge (learn and teach), and grow as a person, personally and professionally. Whenever feasible, we will provide you with the resources to do so.
Transparency & trust
We believe that transparency is essential. Agilytic is a very transparent organization. Everyone in the company knows who our clients are, the turnover, etc. Transparency goes both ways, so we count on everybody to ensure information flows freely.
